Manchester Metropolitan University

According to page 60 of the Research Degrees Handbook, students can use channel binding when submitting two paper copies of their thesis in softback format. However, if the thesis exceeds 32mm in thickness—equivalent to approximately 300 sheets of standard 80gsm paper—channel binding may not be suitable. In such cases, printing the document double-sided could be a viable option.

There is no longer a mandatory requirement to submit the final thesis in hardback format. However, if you need a hardback copy for personal use, your supervisor, or a sponsor, please note that this process takes additional time. While same-day service may be available, hardback binding cannot be completed immediately. More details on the available binding options can be found on our hardback binding page.

University of Manchester Thesis Submission Guidelines

According to university regulations, students must submit two bound copies of their thesis before their viva. Many students opt for softback binding for the initial submission due to its affordability and quick processing. RUL offers channel binding services that meet the University of Manchester’s standards, including gold lettering on the spine.

The required format for lettering follows a specific style:

Channel binding can accommodate a maximum thickness of 32mm, which is roughly 300 sheets of standard 80gsm paper or approximately 340 sheets of 70gsm paper. If your thesis exceeds this limit or is printed on thicker paper, it must be split into two volumes or printed double-sided. Be sure to review the university’s regulations regarding multi-volume submissions. If you have not yet printed your thesis, double-sided printing is available, but it is advisable to confirm with your supervisor, as some prefer single-sided copies.

After successfully completing the viva, students are no longer required to submit hardback-bound copies of their thesis. However, if you need a hardback version for personal use, or for your supervisor or sponsor, please note that this process takes additional time. While same-day service may be available, it is not an on-the-spot service. More details on available binding options can be found on the university’s hardback binding page.

For those who wish to reuse any pages from their channel-bound thesis, RUL provides a service to carefully dismantle the binding, allowing pages to be repurposed as needed.
